The Limfjord

Discover a magnificent fjord landscape, impressive views, charming Limfjord towns and world-class ingredients. The southwestern part of the Limfjord is particularly known for having some of the world's best shellfish.

Here at the Limfjord it is buzzing with life and activities both on land and water

- worth a visit, we think.

Fur

Fur is a small, quiet and unspoiled island in the Limfjord, known for its famous jetty cliffs and hilly landscapes.

22 km2 with only 800 inhabitants.

The island has kilometre-long nature trails, beautiful views over the Limfjord and good opportunities to see seals.

The pier slopes were created for DKK 55 million. years ago. The knot cliffs are the most impressive. Let yourself be impressed by 600 meters of flakes and folds of compressed piers and layers of ash - and go fossil hunting with a good chance of winning.

The guides

Vejlerne is Northern Europe's largest bird reserve. A 60 km2 nature area north of the Limfjord.

Here you will find Denmark's largest reed forests, some of Denmark's largest salt marshes and Denmark's largest population of breeding greylag geese, harriers, terns, black terns, cranes, sea eagles and peregrine falcons. The rare black tern breeds here - together with approximately 1400 pairs of greylag geese. As one of the few places in Denmark, the otter also lives here.

This paradise for birds arose after an abandoned attempt to drain and dam two shallow arms of the Limfjord in 1916. The site is now Denmark's largest natural science research reserve.

You cannot overlook Vejlerne when you drive from Fjerritslev towards Thisted on the A11 main road. Here you can experience the animals and nature of the place from many viewpoints and bird hides as well as at the associated nature centre.

Around the Limfjord

Every year in week 37, the Nordics' largest wooden ship sailing is held. Experience up to 65 beautiful old wooden ships as they sail around the entire Limfjord and fight for the best position. The fantastic ships are located in 6 ports; Løgstør, Thisted, Struer, Nykøbing Mors, Fur and Skive.

It all started in 1988 with just 6 participants. Today it has developed into a glorious folk festival with music and markets in the ports visited.

World-class oysters and clams

Oysters and Mussels also make for a feast at the Limfjorden. The special conditions in the fjord give the contents of the shells a very special character. That is why oysters and mussels from the Danish Limfjord are in demand worldwide.

An idyllic town by the fjord is so well known for its mussels that it has been named Muslingebyen. The town is Løgstør, and here you can enjoy various delicious mussel dishes in the town's restaurants - and in many places you can enjoy the view of the Limfjord at the same time. Every year, the town invites you to the Mussel Harvest Festival in April and the Mussel Festival first in the summer - both festive and well-attended events.

Festivities and delicious tasting experiences can also be found at the harbor in Nykøbing Mors, when the Shellfish Festival is held on the first weekend in June.

In the old days, mussels were actually far from a delicacy at the Limfjord. The mussels were not seen as human food at all. But during World War I, canned oysters became popular as cheap and nutritious food in the trenches. Then, however, the export of the mussels was banned, and only with the Second World War and great demand from Germany did fishing really take off.
